If you hit a great shot every time, you would be world champion!

But if you follow these tips you will hit a great shot nearly every time and at least make a major improvement in your game:

Once the swing gets down to the so called hitting area correctly, the chance of its going wrong is very slight.

Yet, golf being the strange game that it is, there is still the possibility of the good swing going off the track at this late stage.

In both the good swing and the bad, though, when the flaws appear they appear for basically the same reason-trying to “help” the club head get to the ball.

They will appear in the good swing when the player loosens his left-hand grip slightly and collapses his left elbow.

As the result of these actions there comes a peculiar body movement, a sort of heaving action, as though the player were trying, with the body, to help the swing or help hit the ball. It is a very strange contortion indeed.

In this movement the loosening left-hand grip and the collapsing left elbow have the effect of bringing the club up sharply instead of letting it go down and through the ball as it should. The left elbow crooks and bends out to the left, toward the target.

This suddenly shortens the radius of the swing, and since the straight left arm has been performing the function of a constant radius all through the swing, there is nothing for the club to do but come up.

If the swing happens to be from the inside, the loosening left hand and automatic strengthening of the right hand will cause the ball to be hit out to the right a push.

It may be a topped push or, if the club isn’t brought up far enough to make it top the ball, just a push. There is usually trouble to the right on any shot, as every slicer knows, and it doesn’t make any difference whether we slice the ball into that trouble or hit a straight ball into it. It still costs strokes.

A third possibility these flaws may lead to, if they are slight rather than pronounced, is a straight ball that doesn’t go anywhere a dead ball. This, of course, is caused by the loosening of the left-hand grip. The strong connection between the motive force of the arm and the club that is being motivated is weakened. The connecting link (the hand) gives slightly at impact and force is lost.

The best strokes for the good player, of course, are simply to keep his grip tight, hold the wrist position gained by the backward break, hit through with his hands, and let CQAM Jake its course. The first insures a strong, live connecting link between the arms and the club at impact. The second insures a square club face. The hard-swinging hands provide the speed. But COAM? What is COAM anyway?

COAM is the Conservation of Angular Momentum. In the golf swing it is the mysterious factor that makes the club head catch up to the hands, without any effort on the part of the player. Just a few more paragraphs and we will give you the full explanation.

For the poor or average player the same magic moves apply, but he must first learn to get himself into the position the good player is in as he reachers the hitting area retains the hand and wrist position, slides his hips laterally to the left, permits no hand lag, and makes no effort to move the club.

If he does these things he will keep unchanged the eternal triangle and he will be letting the body move the club. If he doesn’t do these things he will never be in the right hitting position. There are just no two ways about it.

The good player is moving most of his weight toward his left leg and his right heel has come up off the ground slightly. His body is beginning to bow out to the left, led by the hips. The upper part of his body, anchored by his head is still back, and his shoulders have not yet turned past the ball, though the left shoulder has risen and the
right shoulder has dropped.

His right arm is in close to his body. His hands are near his right leg but the club is still about horizontal and much of the wrist cock has been retained.

The good player here is coming down into a position behind the ball, so that he can hit it “out from under” and from the inside. He is not turning high and over the ball.

The most puzzling part of this picture is the position of the club, or of the hands and the club. The hands are so far down but the club still has so far to go, a full quarter-circle.

Pictures similar to this one have been printed by the thousands since the advent of high-speed photography. They are perfect for showing us how we should be at this late stage of the swing. But we believe also that they have caused more bad shots than any others ever printed.

Why? Because they have implanted&’and if not implanted, strengthened&’a terrible fear in the mind of the golfer. This is the fear that if he ever gets in this position he will never be able to make the club head catch up to his hands at the ball. Therefore, from this position he feels he would hit worse shots than he hits now, if indeed he were able to hit the ball at all. It looks, to him, impossible.

This is one of the fears that we dwelt on lightly in the preceding chapter&’the fear that you will not be able to make the club head move fast enough. It is largely accountable for what we have termed the average golfer’s eternal preoccupation with the club head.

He thinks of it as the tool that hits the ball, of course, and right from the top of the swing he starts to manipulate it to make it go faster. Or he retards his hands so the club head will catch up. Even though he knows he should not do these things, his subconscious takes command over his reason (as it always will), and he gets an action which has long been known as “hitting too soon,” or “hitting from the top,” or just plain “flipping.” The deep urge to do this is motivated not alone by the idea that he must make the club head catch up to his hands.

Part of it stems from the mistaken idea that he must snap his wrists into the shot. We are not saying this snapping cannot be or isn’t done by experts. We are saying that it isn’t necessary for the average player. Even worse, it is suicidal. The average player, trying to do it, always gets the club head to the ball ahead of his hands.

That is because, as we have mentioned, the swing through the ball is only a continuation of the first movement of the downswing, the movement that brings us to the hitting area.

If you&’re fed up with loosing every game and feeling that it is time to give up golf for good, then perhaps it is time to head for a golf school. But before you hand over your credit card, you must first of all think of four things when selecting your school.

Goal

All top sportsmen, whatever sport they partake, have a goal. This is something that most people overlook however it is a crucial step that shouldn&’t be ignored. Think carefully about what aspect of your game you would like to see better results in. There are schools that specialize in specific aspects of the game.

Some golf schools will, for example, concentrate solely on your swing whilst others will look to improve every aspect of your game. Think carefully about this because it will affect your decisions on which school to attend.

Budget

Like it or not, chances are you are not a millionaire. Thus, you will have to select a course with price in mind as prices can vary considerably, anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars.

The price can vary due to the following:

&’Who provides tuition &’ big names attract bigger prices

&’Location

&’Accommodation
&’One-on-one or group tuition

&’Video analysis of your golf swing

Combine with a Vacation

If you already go on a golf vacation every year then this is an ideal opportunity to combine the two as it will keep your costs to a minimum. Many people love the ability to enjoy the golf lessons by day but then have the freedom to explore outside and experience the local nightlife.

Be Prepared

To get the most out of your golf tuition make sure you have done your homework. Have all of your needed tools and equipment with you and remember you can only get out of your schooling what you put in.

In order to improve your game, constructive criticism is a must. Don&’t be afraid of asking questions, you are there to learn, not pretend you know everything to fellow students.

I would like to focus the jest of this article on the basis of the golf swing&’ the grip. With spring in the air and golf on our minds let&’s get this year off to a good start by not overlooking the basics.

Unquestionably the biggest mistake I see in people&’s golf swing isn&’t in their golf swing itself.

Nope. Not at all.

More often than not the mistakes happen before the swing even begins. The first mistake is made in how the golfer holds the golf club. After that the next mistake usually comes in with how they stand up to the ball. Poor posture. Then after having two strikes against them, they then finish the job of making it almost impossible to hit a good golf shot by improperly lining up to their intended target.

Of course, after hitting several (possibly several hundred) balls with only a minute few being what they think is acceptable the tired frustrated golfer asks&’ what am I doing wrong with my swing?

For the purposes of this article I want to discuss the very first part of the proper golf swing &’ the golf grip.

In fact, let&’s be even more precise here; the left hand grip on the golf club. Oh sure&’ there&’s much more than just the grip including the aforementioned posture and alignment. But there&’s only so much typing I can do at one time so let&’s stay with the grip for this communication.

The position of your club face is greatly influenced by your grip. And this is especially true as your club face enters the impact zone and contacts the ball. Certainly there is an abundance of golf swing peccadillo&’s that can occur that can cause those woeful golf shots. You know the ones I&’m talking about: the banana ball, the smothered hook, skied, skulled, and chili dipped. Ok, I&’ll stop&’ If you&’ll stop trying to correct your golf swing by in incessantly hitting ball after ball trying to make every physical adjustment known to man (and some that aren&’t) within your golf swing itself and begin by using a fundamentally sound grip.

So you&’re going to continue on with me&’ great!

Let&’s talk about the left hand (right handed golfers) first and foremost.

The left had should come in contact with the grip of the club in such a manner that the grip cuts a diagonal across the palm of the left hand from the crook in the index finger down and across to the bottom right pad of the left hand.

When you close your left hand, your club should be held in the first to fingers and your palm.

The key that you look for out of your left had grip is quite simple. As you address your ball and look down, you should only see two knuckles of your left hand. As an instructor standing directly across from you, I too should only see the same. If I don&’t see EXACTLY two knuckles of your left hand then we take a step back and re-grip until we get it right. And don&’t try to cheat and re-grip club just as you begin to take the golf club away and into your back swing. FOUL I say. And I will stop you.

Ok. I certainly haven&’t given you that much to remember here. But seriously golfers, resign yourself to go through a quick, short checklist before you begin the journey we call the golf swing. Start with your grip. Get used to it. A proper grip will feel awkward to you particularly if your grip has been way off. Stay with it. Know that it&’s the right way to grip the golf club. Piece by piece let&’s lay the foundation for a good swing.

Fascinatingly enough a bad golfer is consistent enough with his/her consistent mistakes and poor play, that it promotes even more bad golf and frustration.

Actually a bad golfer ignores or is unaware of what has to be the single most important aspect of the golf swing. This is the setup or positioning before the swing.

It does not matter how good your swing is and how much correct technique you have used. If you do not pay attention to your swing, you are a bad golfer and it will clearly show when you have hit the ball.

All great golfers are aware of how important the setup is and you can be sure that many bad golfers are not. If you setup correctly for a shot, chances are extremely high that you will hit a good shot. So important is your setup that even if you swing poorly in a good setup position, you are bound to at least hit a reasonable shot.

A good setup will enable you achieve a good posture and the sort of balance that will help you maintain balance and inevitably control throughout the shot.

The correct setup comes with correct training and even more important; exercising and conditioning of the muscles you use in your entire body for the swing. A bad golfer will more often than not be the sort of person who does not do golf-specific exercises aimed at improving their golf. The result is that they will not even be able to tell the difference between a good setup position and a bad one, simply because they will tend to feel uncomfortable in both.

It is amazing but true that all it takes to move you swiftly to the ranks of a good golfer from amongst the majority of bad golfers is a simple exercise routine, most of which you can even do from your office while you work.

Golf is now accepted globally as a popular sport activity. Since it has gone mainstream, it is common to see commercials on TV featuring this beloved sport. I am certain that you have seen some golf clubs that are being advertised in the market, claiming they can help you hit longer and harder than ever before. These new clubs promise to improve your game, but you should beware of these promises. If something is too good to be true, then it most probably is.

Everybody should approach golf clubs with caution at first. Determine if the advertised brand is something you really need. If it is commonly seen in a TV commercial then the company manufacturing it has to have plenty of marketing budget to afford the airtime placements.

This translates to more expensive equipment. Is a high price your guarantee of better quality? Not all the time.

A practical option is testing out the golf club before buying. Try to get a feel for the equipment. See if it suits your body type. Is it long enough? Does the grip hug your palms? How do you find the weight? When buying the clubs it is ideal that an experienced player that you trust accompanies you. This way you can be sure that the advice you will be receiving is honest and factual. You need not worry of being misled.

You can also ask your golf friends if you can borrow their clubs. Once you get more comfortable with the brand, you can then seriously consider taking it to the next step and buying for yourself.

When you are about to buy your golf club, make sure you find out more about the brand and model. What is its reputation? How long has it been made? Do experts recommend it? These set of questions can assist you in making a sensible decision. It will provide you with a working framework of how you can intelligently assess your options.

Not all golf clubs are expensive. If they are, then it is up to you if you wish to invest in one or not. If you are still starting to play the sport, then settle for a beginner&’s set. These are inexpensive, and will allow you to play the game correctly. Expensive clubs, if used in the proper way, can give better performance. Yet it will not mean anything to a beginner or a non-professional player.

A golf club can range from being a low cost investment to an expensive piece of equipment.
The decision on what golf club to buy is dependent on what you value. Remember that you do not always need the high end products. Sometimes you can make do with ordinary ones. Just think wisely and ask around before you do decide to buy golf clubs.
