Most of what makes or breaks a shot happens before the swing. One of the keys to unlocking your golfing potential is making sure that you have a good, tight grip on the club. A little instruction can go a long way in improving your grip.

Think of it this way: the only part of your body that touches the golf club is your hands. This is why your grip is so important. If you’re slicing, chances are you have a grip problem.

You have to keep a strong grip, but not too strong. An instructor can show you how to do this; you have to give it about 50% of your strength. This is intuitive, of course. How much is 50%? Instruction can help you to understand just how much pressure you need.

Here are some basic tips for your grip. This is a common type of beginners’ grip. You may change your grip over time, but this will at least give you a good start. You can also visit http://www.getgoodatgolf.com to get more tips.

- The club should be held in your left hand. About 60% of your finger surface should be touching the handle. As a general guideline, this should be the last three fingers of your left hand, depending on how big your hands are.

- The callous pad that you wear on your left hand should be above the grip. This is really important; you shouldn’t have it next to the grip.

- Have your left thumb next to the right side of the grip. Your thumb and index finger should form a V.

- You have to close your right hand over the left thumb, and take hold of the left side of the grip. It is difficult to understand this without some physical instruction on how to do it properly.

- Finally, keep your grip tight, but keep your arm muscles relaxed.

It sounds complicated, doesn’t it? Well, it is, and for best results you need a little instruction, even if it’s just a few pointers on how to do it. No amount of diagrams and videos can show you completely how to do it correctly; you have to really feel it.

However, there are some training tools you can use. You can buy trainer grips that will help you figure out how to grip your club if you’re a first time golfer. They retail for about $10 and come with instructions and tips.

You can also get golf tips and tutorial videos. If you don’t have time to take golf lessons with a certified instructor, this might be a good way to help you get your grip worked out.

The most common grip is the ten-finger grip, although some of the pros, such as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, use an interlocking grip. This is a tricky one to get just right, and it’s not very common. But, it works for them!

Every golfer’s grip is slightly different from the next. And, lots of golfers gradually change their grip over time, when they find something new that works well for them. Find the grip that works for you and stick with it, but always keep your eyes open for new ideas.

How Important is the Golf Grip?

Golfing magazines are full of tips and instruction and basic do this but don&’t do that theories. How is it possible for a new golfer to really understand what aspects of the game are important and which ones are just someone&’s overgrown opinion? Simple trial and error can significantly help you deduce which golfing magazines, whether they are online or offline, are actually offering useful advice. &’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’ Nobody likes to pay for a service they are unhappy with, so why pay for a magazine that offers unusable tips?

One of the better online golfing magazines is a sweet little secret found at bestprogolfguide. The tips are real and useable and coherent. One of the very basic examples that I truly found helpful is the golf grip. How important is the golf grip anyway? To my surprise, it&’s actually a vital part of the quality of a golfer&’s game.

&’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’ The golfer&’s grip is actually where the basic game begins. A weak and pliable grip will result in a weak and pliable swing. A grip that is too hard and stiff will produce a swing that is better suited for baseball than golf.

The first time anyone placed a golf club in my hand there was very little instruction on how to hold the club. I was taught how to lace my fingers in the right direction, but beyond that there was very little guidance. I hung on tight and baseball whacked the ball straight up a hill and into the windshield of the instructor&’s car. That is an honest and true story. After that incident my golfing days were numbered. I had excellent power but absolutely no control. I was, incidentally, a fairly good baseball player.

Obtaining a Better Golf Grip &’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’

Understanding the basics to a better golf grip can significantly lower your scores and best of all, improve your control. Starting with the left hand, this hand is responsible for gripping the club handle. The fingers of the left hand begin the base grip. This is of course aimed at right handed golfers. Those who are left handed golfers would switch the entire process to adjust to their predominant hand.

Most people have heard the analogy that you want to grip the golf club as though you are shaking hands with it. While it is a good analogy in getting people to reach for the club in the appropriate manner, &’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’ there is a lot of play in that golfing advice. Let&’s add a more specific notion of shaking hands with the golf club and meeting the knuckles of your left middle joint of the forefinger reaching approximately two inches from the top of the club handle and the bottom three fingers approaching the base of the club.

The right hand is then going to join in on the action and take its grasp around the golf handle. The club handle should rest right at the knuckle/palm intersection of the hand. You don&’t want the club to be too far toward the finger tips and you want the club to rest firmly toward the base of the fingers toward the hand.

Now you successfully have both hands on the club. Looking down at their position you should be able to find a V shape created by the thumb and forefinger on the left hand. This V shape should have a direction. It should be aimed toward the right shoulder, pointing right about the middle of the shoulder to be precise. Adjust your grip until you have the club lying toward the base of your fingers toward the palm and the V shape of the left thumb and forefinger pointing directly toward the middle of the right shoulder. This seems like an awkward position, but once you adjust the grip accordingly, it should actually have a mildly normal feel to it. Get comfortable with it and practice getting just those basics of the golf grip down without having to spend twenty minutes adjusting your grip every time you pick up a club. You should be able to get it to the point where this part of gripping the golf club is natural and automatic.

&’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’ Once you have mastered this basic approach to gripping the golf club, start to take notice of some finer details in your grip. There should be a little flex to your left wrist. The wrist should take on a mild angle that resembles a &’cupping&’ angle. Relax your wrists until you find that motion and angle.

The V shape that your right forefinger and thumb produce should be aimed up toward the right ear. All of these &’aiming&’ suggestions are assuming that you are gripping the golf club in the stance you take just prior to swinging the golf club.

The palm of the right hand is basically responsible for the direction the ball will go once it is in the air. While you are standing their adjusting your grip on your golf club and finding the stance that works best for you, you want to keep in mind that your goal is to &’aim&’ the golf ball with the palm of your right hand. This of course only works if your grip on the golf club is accurate and your hands mold together as one cohesive unit.

When gripping your golf club, you want your hands to be able to work together. Aside from that, you want your hands to work in sync with the rest of your body. By developing a natural but distinct grip on the golf club you can encourage your entire body to work cohesively all the way through to the end of the golf club and produce a swing that will carry the ball both the distance and the direction you are aiming for.

Practice your swing often and carry your follow through all the way through your body. This will help eliminate chop shots that result from an uncomfortable grip on the golf club. Spending a little time at the driving range is always a good idea when making even minor adjustments to your swing. Practicing the adjustments for the first time on the fairway with a bunch of golfing associates is typically a frustrating maneuver.

White Knuckles &’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’

White knuckling the club is a common mistake when learning new procedures to gripping the golf club. A golfer tends to get nervous about his new technique or small adjustments and wraps the club in an all out death grip. Relax a little and enjoy the challenge of creating a better golf swing.

On the opposite end of the scale avoid gripping the golf club with limp hands. This eliminates the control you are gaining by adjusting your grip in the first place and creates a very sloppy swing and follow through.

You want to grip the club firmly in your grasp and hold it with confidence. This confident but relaxed grip can help to flatten the head of the golf club as it makes contact with the golf ball, which can ultimately assist in cleaning up a slice.

Golfing Tips &’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’

The basics of gripping a golf club, while often an ignored or barely recognized intricacy of improving a golf game, is really only the beginning of overhauling an entire golf game. From grips to stances to head movement issues there is a chronic plethora of advice and tips floating around out there on the internet and in golfing magazines. How do you asses which tips are worthwhile and which ones will simply destroy what golf skill you have picked up over time?

Not all golf tips apply to all people. Just because one set of tips is completely useless to you doesn&’t mean they won&’t help someone else recover a lost game. Every individual&’s physical body is different, so sometimes just a small adjustment in the tip makes it a valuable golf tip to add to your game. Perhaps you are taller than average or smaller than average. Most golf tips are written with the average body in mind. If you have particularly long arms, you may have to take that into account as you read through golf tips.

If you have been golfing for years and you have developed particular habits that are hard to break, remember (&’Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game&’)h that often the initial habit breaking period will lead to a decline in your golf game. This is actually true of any sport. If the unusual habit is working well for you, there may not be a need to change it. If it isn&’t working well for you and you decide to change it, be patient with yourself. It will take time to see any actual improvement.

For helpful golf tips that come from pros and experts, remember the bestprogolfguide website. The tips available are written by experts and are clear enough to apply without clarification. This is a fabulous resource to quietly improve your golf game and wow your associates out on the fairway. Happy golfing!

First things first; if you&’re going to take up learning the game of golf, the first thing that you actually and literally come in contact with is your golf club. So it seems only logical that we start with the grip.

Understanding and establishing a proper grip is your first step. The grip sets the tone for all else to come. A good grip allows you to swing your club with control during full swings with maximum speed. It allows for you to bring the clubface squarely through the impact zone, and determines how much you club face rotation you get.

You&’ll want to find a grip pressure that allows you to deliver enough force to the ball without the club twisting at impact; yet you don&’t want your hands and forearms overly tight and stiff.

Grip pressure was once described by Sam Snead as though you are holding a bird in your hands and you want to hold tight enough that the bird can&’t fly away yet not so tight as to hurt the bird.

For our purposes here and especially you are just learning how to grip the golf club, we&’ll discuss gripping the club with a neutral type grip (neither favoring a draw or a fade).

In this position the &’V&’s&’ created with the thumb and forefinger as you address the golf ball will point just to the right of your chin (right handed golfer). In fact, with this grip, someone standing directly across from you would see only the first two knuckles of your left hand. So, two knuckles of the left hand showing and your &’V&’s&’ pointing to just right of your chin and you have a neutral – traditional type golf grip.

With your forefinger and little finger that meet underneath the club grip; you can either choose to overlap these to fingers or you can interlock them; whichever is more comfortable to you and gives you the most confidence.

Hold the club more toward your fingers than back in the palm of the hand. We want to be able to get a good natural wrist cock.

When you are first just introducing a golf club to your hands, don&’t worry about whacking golf balls right away. Rather, get used to the grip first. As you next begin to learn about address and set up, spend time just swinging the club back and forth and get used to how the club and the grip feel. Don&’t worry too much hitting a ball at this early juncture.

Down the road of your learning curve just bit, you&’ll no doubt become curious about &’drawing&’ and or &’fading&’ the golf ball. Drawing or fading the golf ball begins with your grip. Although drawing or fading your golf shot goes beyond the scope of this article, I want to touch on this as it relates to our discussion on the grip.

Remembering your initial neutral grip that we discussed; if you want to grip to draw the ball you&’ll rotate your hands/grip slightly clockwise. In other words, this will produce a three knuckle grip… up from your two knuckle grip we talked about earlier. To grip to fade the ball, you&’ll go a knuckle the other way. So, you will reduce your neutral two knuckle grip down one to a one knuckle grip.

I mention this, not to imply that you will want to immediately want to begin working your golf shots from right to left and left to right; rather I want to give you a basic understanding how the golf grip works first from the neutral hand position.

Start building your golf swing with your teaching professional by laying a good foundation that starts with – - – the grip.

I would like to focus the jest of this article on the basis of the golf swing&’ the grip. With spring in the air and golf on our minds let&’s get this year off to a good start by not overlooking the basics.

Unquestionably the biggest mistake I see in people&’s golf swing isn&’t in their golf swing itself.

Nope. Not at all.

More often than not the mistakes happen before the swing even begins. The first mistake is made in how the golfer holds the golf club. After that the next mistake usually comes in with how they stand up to the ball. Poor posture. Then after having two strikes against them, they then finish the job of making it almost impossible to hit a good golf shot by improperly lining up to their intended target.

Of course, after hitting several (possibly several hundred) balls with only a minute few being what they think is acceptable the tired frustrated golfer asks&’ what am I doing wrong with my swing?

For the purposes of this article I want to discuss the very first part of the proper golf swing &’ the golf grip.

In fact, let&’s be even more precise here; the left hand grip on the golf club. Oh sure&’ there&’s much more than just the grip including the aforementioned posture and alignment. But there&’s only so much typing I can do at one time so let&’s stay with the grip for this communication.

The position of your club face is greatly influenced by your grip. And this is especially true as your club face enters the impact zone and contacts the ball. Certainly there is an abundance of golf swing peccadillo&’s that can occur that can cause those woeful golf shots. You know the ones I&’m talking about: the banana ball, the smothered hook, skied, skulled, and chili dipped. Ok, I&’ll stop&’ If you&’ll stop trying to correct your golf swing by in incessantly hitting ball after ball trying to make every physical adjustment known to man (and some that aren&’t) within your golf swing itself and begin by using a fundamentally sound grip.

So you&’re going to continue on with me&’ great!

Let&’s talk about the left hand (right handed golfers) first and foremost.

The left had should come in contact with the grip of the club in such a manner that the grip cuts a diagonal across the palm of the left hand from the crook in the index finger down and across to the bottom right pad of the left hand.

When you close your left hand, your club should be held in the first to fingers and your palm.

The key that you look for out of your left had grip is quite simple. As you address your ball and look down, you should only see two knuckles of your left hand. As an instructor standing directly across from you, I too should only see the same. If I don&’t see EXACTLY two knuckles of your left hand then we take a step back and re-grip until we get it right. And don&’t try to cheat and re-grip club just as you begin to take the golf club away and into your back swing. FOUL I say. And I will stop you.

Ok. I certainly haven&’t given you that much to remember here. But seriously golfers, resign yourself to go through a quick, short checklist before you begin the journey we call the golf swing. Start with your grip. Get used to it. A proper grip will feel awkward to you particularly if your grip has been way off. Stay with it. Know that it&’s the right way to grip the golf club. Piece by piece let&’s lay the foundation for a good swing.
