Tips In Buying A Golf Ball

Did you know that close to 5000 designs have been developed, approved and patented since the 1990s ? its no wonder then that it is one of the most artfully designed items in the field of sports.

With so many options to choose from, choosing a suitable golf all is indeed a golf player’s nightmare.

Because of the multiplicity of player types, the designers have also tried to develop different designs of balls which can suit each player, so that maximum fun can be derived from the game, as well as increase the possibility of a par.

Structure of a golf ball

1. Two-piece balls, also called ‘distance balls’ by the players are made up of material that is hard and immune to cuts. They are known for their ‘distance’. The inner of these balls are tight and can be made of different materials. The distance a ball can travel is decided by how hard the inner is. It is a fact though that these balls lack the ability to spin, and it is difficult to manage these two-piece balls, because of its limited ability to spin.

2. For better feel and ability to spin, three-piece golf balls are ideal. They are made only for this purpose. The outer softer coat or Balata covers a tight inside. There is a fabric layer that occupies the space between the outer cover and the core. This lessens or softens the blow of the club on the ball. Though this gives the ball a better feel and spin, the areas of compromise are longevity and the distance.

3. When you want an all-purpose ball, go for balls which multi-layered. These balls consist of a lasting, soft cover which contains many layers of thin materials and a vastly improved inner core. This makes the ball good in all respects.

Choosing the right ball for you :

1. Novices and players with high handicap who are most likely to hit the ball wrongly, should go for two-piece golf balls which has a Surlyn coat since these balls last longer, cheap and come with the ‘distance’ advantages.

2. Golf balls with three-piece structure with Elastomer or Balata outer cover are good for mid handicap players. These balls are capable of ‘ swing speeds’ and do not make any compromise on the distance aspect.

3. Experienced golf players should choose multi-layered balls. Since these players are low handicap and have good ‘swing speeds’ they can get the advantage of distance, feel as well as good spins.

Much like other equipment required to play golf, getting the right ball for you would require a lot of trial and error till you hit the right choice. But do not refrain from playing this enjoyable game – you will definitely get to the most perfect choice of ball in no time.

Ball position is a critical component that&’s often overlooked by players with high golf handicaps. Ball position decides a shot&’s initial direction. While theories on ball position abound, you need to find one that&’s right for you.

Ball position affects a clubhead&’s swing path, as I explain in my golf lessons. If the ball is too far back, the clubhead moves on an in-to-out swing path at impact, sending the ball to the target&’s right. If the ball is too far forward, the clubhead moves on an out-to-in swing path at impact, sending the ball to the target&’s left.

Correctly positioning the ball increases the clubhead&’s chances of meeting the ball at the correct angle of attack and on the right target path. It also helps eliminate a fade or hook, along with other swing adjustments.

Most teaching pros subscribe to the standard ball position theory as do most players and most professional golfers. This theory advocates changing the ball&’s position depending on the club used. If you&’ve taken golf lessons or read my golf tips, you&’re probably familiar with this theory.

For example, the ideal ball position for the driver is just inside the heel of your front foot. Placing the ball there ensures that the clubhead makes impact just beyond the swing&’s lowest point, with an upward, sweeping motion of the club&’the perfect swing for the being used.

The ideal position for long irons, on the other hand, is slightly back from the driver&’s position. The ideal position for mid-irons is one or two balls back from this position. And the ideal position for short irons is in the middle of your stance.

These positions place the ball at the lowest point in your swing, given the length of the club used and the type of swing taken. In addition, placing the ball at these positions enable the golfer to make clean contact with a crisp descending blow&’the key to hitting iron shots well.

Much golf instruction is built around the standard theory. But not every teaching pro advocates it. David Leadbetter, who&’s taught numerous pro golfers, like Nick Price, and written several books, offers another approach. It&’s one he stresses in his golf instruction books. Like the standard theory, it makes sense.

Leadbetter suggests that players with lower golf handicaps position the ball

(1) just inside the left heel for woods and
(2) two balls back for irons. For players with high golf handicaps, he suggests positioning the ball

(1) in the middle of their stances for irons and
(2) a ball or two forward from that position for woods.

His reasoning is logical. Players with low golf handicaps use their lower bodies more aggressively than players with high handicaps. Players with low golf handicaps are capable of taking advantage of a forward ball position. Players with high handicaps are not.

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus also offers a ball position theory, which he explains in his golf instruction books. It, too, make sense.

Nicklaus advocates a constant ball position, regardless of the club used. He believes that the ball opposite the left heel is the only spot where the club ever travels parallel to the target line.

Any other position towards the back foot means the ball is struck too early in the downswing.

Instead of re-positioning the ball, Nicholas favors changing your stance, depending on the club. Open your stance for the shorter irons, and pull the right foot back, to make the stance wider and squarer, as the club&’s shaft length increases. Winner of 18 majors, Nicholas has a theory that seems to work for him at least.

Another consideration with ball position is tee height. I tell players taking my golf lessons that the ball&’s equator should be even with the top of the driver when the ball is on the tee. Placing the ball higher enables the player to hit the ball on the upward arc of his/her swing. Players with oversize clubheads, then, need longer tees to reach the right height.

A third consideration with ball position is weather. If it&’s windy, tee the ball higher if you&’re hitting with the wind to generate loft. The added loft enables the wind can carry the ball farther.

Tee the ball lower if you&’re hitting against the wind to produce a low shot, like a line drive in baseball. This type of shot cuts through the wind and rolls farther than a shot with loft.

Regardless of which theory it is, find one that&’s right for you, just like Jack Nicklaus did. Test each theory out while on the practice range and under game conditions. Work on it until you find the ball position that&’s right for you. Then, use it every time you play.

Finding good golf ball reviews is essential to finding the best golf balls for your game. Very simply, without playing the best ball possible, you will never achieve your full potential with your golf game. The wound golf balls are the more conventional types that have been in play for many years. However, the solid balls have only been introduced as recently as 20 years ago.

Before, golfers mostly believed that solid balls offered them little spin and performed relatively poorly in general. This is because they were more used to the wound balls. However, with the technology today, this generally isn&’t the case, and many have found that solid balls have actually caught up to wound balls in terms of overall performance.

In past days, golf balls that were generally built for distance and were usually much harder around the greens, and generally were hard as a rock when putting them. Therefore, you usually had either choose distance or accuracy or fail.

If you chose feel, the balls would not go very far. However, with the advanced technology of today’s golf balls, you can easily find balls it will still go along ways and have great feel around the greens. Of course, just about any ball you buy today will go a long ways and have reasonable feel around the greens; golf balls have come a long way since the old days. However, just because the balls have improved doesn&’t mean that some aren&’t better than others; thus the need to find good golf ball reviews to help you pick the best.

Some important things to look for when reading golf ball reviews is how the golf ball will take off, which is the launching of the golf ball. Also, the construction of the golf is very important. Some golf balls are three-piece balls, and others have a four piece, etc.

First of all, don’t just be convinced when you see your friends or other golfers using a particular kind of golf balls. Their games are probably much different than yours, and a different golf ball will suit everybody differently.

The earliest golf balls have been traced to late 18th century and were made of wood in Scotland. They were very susceptible to the elements and ended up with cracks. Early 19th century saw the advent of the feathery ball, made of leather and stuffed tight with feathers. This ball became very popular until the “guttie” made its entry, made of solid gutta-percha rubber.

It was more durable and had stronger resistance to the elements. A lot of science has gone into designing a modern golf ball since and today’s golf balls are a scientific combination of chemicals and polymers making it accurately fly farther.

Golf Balls today are of three kinds – two-piece, three-piece and high performance. The two-piece ball is made of a solid core and cover and offers better distance with slow swing, while the three-piece ball is made of solid core, wound with elastic and then covered, offering more control. High performance balls are for accuracy.

The two-piece balls are designed for beginners and the other varieties are fro advanced golfers. The cover is generally made of Surlyn or Balata. Surlyn is more durable and strong whereas Balata is softer and provides better grip and control with spin. Balata is preferred by most golfers. Two-piece balls are cheaper and highly available. Three-piece and high performance balls are very expensive and designed for professionals and advanced players.

Choosing a golf ball could be tricky, if you choose the ball used by Tiger Woods, it is not necessary that you can have the same handicap that he does. The choice has to be made as per you game style. The wrong ball could give you bigger handicaps and the right ball could make you feel like a champion.

Choosing a golf ball will depend upon your swing and style of play. If you are still confused, you can try each of the varieties for some days at a time and compare the results.

Similar to choosing your golf clubs, choose the golf ball that suits your swing and game so as to eliminate weaknesses and build upon your strengths. Never go by brands, brands are secondary to performance and suitability. Make sure you like a golf ball because it betters your play, not because it was made by Nike or Yonex.

Finally, do not fall for personalized and logo golf balls, they are just temptations.

Even after playing the game for years (decades?) you never know what’s going to happen each time you step foot on the golf course. Personally speaking, it is this &’unknown&’ aspect of golf that makes the game the most exciting sport to play, and nerve wracking too! I try to hit a full round at my local course at least three times per week and every game I play is an entirely new experience altogether.

Because of the hundreds of unexpected shots that golf brings you, it is imperative that you take advantage of your practice time. Regular practice is the only way that you can experience some of the irregular situations your golf ball may get into. And speaking of practice, the best advice that I can give is to start utilizing unconventional approaches to your golf game.

What Does Unconventional Practice Mean?

Far too many players spend the majority of their time hitting long distance shots at the golf range, with a small percentage attacking their basic short game shots. Either way, neither one of these approaches practiced 100% of the time will present you with the opportunity to make those strange and undesirable shots that a real golf game will inevitably give you.

Free Golf Lesson: Look Away

To give you a perfect example of an unconventional practice shot, here is a lesson that can help you keep your head down and eyes on the ball when initiating your swing when your ball is in a troubled spot.

Step 1: First take your stance to the right side of the ball if you are left handed, and to the left side of the ball if you are a righty. Now face away from the target. Not looking directly at the target may seem awkward at first, but go with it, relax, and loosen up your body.

Step 2: Now hold the club (whichever you like) with it extended downwards from your most dominant hand. The blade should be pointing towards the ground, directly at your feet.

Step 3: Next, place the blade of your club behind the golf ball and turn your head slightly back in order to properly aim your shot.

Step 4: Pull the club upwards while extending it forward. Then swing the club down and along your target line as best possible. Follow through as far as you possible can.

Step 5: Resist the urge to turn around to see the end result. Simply concentrate on following through and getting the ball back in to play towards the green.

We &’older&’ golfers tend to forget basics, and/or ignore them&’. Don&’t, it&’s always a good idea to get back to them regularly.

A golf ball retriever is a tool that every golfer should have to eliminate the need to bend and stoop to locate your ball. While a golf ball retriever is actually very simple, it is a tool that can make your golf game much more fun, much easier, cleaner, and simply more enjoyable. When those that are new to golfing hear of such a contraption they tend to snicker and wonder why in the world they would ever need a ball retriever. After just a few games most golfers have a new understanding and appreciation for the golf ball retriever.

A golf ball retriever is just that, it retrieves balls so that the golfer does not have to go into water, mud, or rocks to retrieve a miss-hit. Ball retrievers often come in very handy when you play on a course that has a lot of ponds, lakes, wooded areas, as well as rock gardens. Of course, you never intend to hit your ball into these areas, but every now and again it will happen and a golf ball retriever will make it a lot easier to get your ball without all of the climbing and stooping that is generally associated with locating ones ball. Because of your golf ball retriever you&’ll find that you have to buy golf balls less often because you won&’t just write them off when they land in hard to reach areas.

There are a few different golf ball retrievers on the market.

Two of the most well known are the IGOTCHA golf ball retriever and the Golden Retriever golf ball retriever. There are many other retrievers on the market, these two products are just known for their reliability as well as their durability. Because there are these great products as well as others on the market it can be difficult to ascertain which is right for you. The great thing is that all ball retrievers are relatively affordable, so you can go for one of the well-known products of something else on just about any budget.

The IGOTCHA golf ball retriever is also very popular and can be purchased for right around $30 as well. Like other retrievers the IGOTCHA comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 6-18 feet long allowing you to grab your ball with ease from any area. IGOTCHA can grab your golf ball from water, mud, rocks, and soggy areas of green after a rain so that your pants as well as your shoes can stay clean. IGOTCHA has cleverly come up with four different ball retrievers known as the Executive, the Executive XL, and the Biggest. IGOTCHA is definitely a quality product that many golfers can get a lot of use out of.

The Golden Retriever golf ball retriever will usually cost about $30 and will fit into or attach to golf bags with ease. Even though the Golden Retriever comes in 7, 12, and 18 foot the handle is telescopic so that you don&’t have to lug around a huge ball retriever from hole to whole during your game. This ball retriever can be fully immersed in water or mud should it happen to land in one of these things. The claw like handles will allow you to simply scoop up the ball with one hand and then drop the ball into the other. Because the handle is telescopic you can reach a ball that is in the middle of the pond.

A golf ball retriever is a tool that every golfer should have. If the golfer in your life doesn&’t already have one, a retriever makes a great fathers day, birthday, mother&’s day, or Christmas gift.

Learning to golf successfully is not something that you can really learn while playing a video game. This news is sometimes a crushing blow to those who have spent hours playing Nintendo’s Wii Sports but it is in fact the crushing reality. Learning how to play golf in real life is sometimes very complicated and will require that you pay close attention to the exact rules and form. While learning from a golf instructor is a wise idea, there are a few mistakes that many beginners tend to make. Learning how to overcome these mistakes will greatly improve your chances of playing a good game of golf and walking away from the green after a successful game.

One of the biggest problems that beginners have when learning golf is they tend to look up when they actually go to strike the ball. This is a problem because it can result in a stroke being counted even if you did not hit the ball. You can just imagine how this can quickly add up to a horrible golf score. It is important to always look down until after you have hit the ball. To ensure that you do stay down until after the hit ensure that you keep your hips properly rotated. If you have trouble with this concept talk to your instructor for some specific tips to help you. Additionally, ensuring that you keep your arms extended fully while you are swinging has been known to help many beginning golfers. Your last step should be counting to five after you strike the ball before you look up. This will help you pace yourself and help you avoid looking up too quickly.

Another common problem for beginning golfers is that many putts on the green are continuously missed. To help overcome this problem you should ensure that you are standing in the putting stance and looking straight down at the top of your ball. If you are not looking directly down, you are likely to miss the appropriate hit and your ball will veer off in an undesirable direction. Only look straight down at the ball when you actually putt and you will be looking at a much greater chance of actually hitting the ball into the hole without having to continuously putt and putt again.

Many new golfers also tend to have a problem with the ball going into the sides of the green, rather than straight ahead. While this may seem like a very complicated problem to correct, it is actually quite simple with a bit of patience. The first thing you always need to keep in mind is your stance. If you are not standing appropriately before you even swing the club, you are not going to have a successful stroke. You need to ensure that you are taking the time to carefully analyze your stance before you ever swing, if you notice that your club is not squarely touching the ball then you may need to back up a bit to ensure that you are not hitting the ball from the side of the club. This is one of the biggest things that will throw a ball to one side of the green or another. Ensuring a solid, square swing will help your ball go to the desired location with a bit of practice.

Hooking is one of the last major flaws that strikes at most beginners. This is something that can be quite difficult to correct as well. Some have a problem with their stance that causes the ball to hook, while others are gripping the club too much, causing it to hit the ball the wrong way. Regardless of your problem, taking a close look at your stance, as well as ensuring that you are not gripping the club too tightly should be quite helpful in correcting a hooked ball. Of course, once you have started making adjustments to your stance or even your grip, you need to practice a bit to improve your skills.
